What is load securing?
Load securing refers to all measures taken to protect goods from slipping, tipping or falling during transport. The aim is to prevent transport damage and ensure safety on the road, rail or sea
This includes lashing, bracing or securing the load with aids such as lashing straps, anti-slip mats or dunnage bags. A correctly secured load remains firmly in place even during sudden braking manoeuvres or cornering and thus fulfils the legal requirements for safe transport
- Protection against transport damage
- Increased road safety
- Avoidance of legal consequences
- Protection of the vehicle
- Economic advantages
- Occupational safety
- Preservation of insurance cover
- Fewer cases of damage
Load securing for lorries, trains, containers, sprinters & aircraft
When it comes to load securing, it is important to understand the variety of products available as well as their specific applications and benefits. At Sandax, you will find an extensive range of securing equipment designed specifically for different transport needs.
To optimally secure your load, mechanical load securing devices such as clamping beams and aluminium load beams offer a robust and flexible solution to efficiently and safely secure a wide range of load types. These can be adjusted to different lengths and are therefore suitable for different load compartment sizes. By using these beams, which are compatible with lashing rails, the load is protected from slipping and the loading space is optimally utilised at the same time.
Also indispensable are lashing straps, which are available in various lengths and strengths to fulfil a wide range of load security requirements. These straps, equipped with advanced ratchets, enable loads to be lashed securely and quickly. Special dunnage bags complete the range by filling gaps between loads, preventing them from shifting or tipping over during transport. For more specific requirements, such as securing heavy machinery or bulky items, robust, wider lashing straps are available that offer greater tensile strength. These are particularly important when the load requires a high breaking load.
Another essential load securing product for trucks are anti-slip mats, which are designed to be placed on loading surfaces to minimise slippage and provide additional stability. By integratingthese products into your load securing strategy, you can not only increase safety during transport, but also improve the efficiency of your logistics processes. Invest in high-quality and specialised load securing equipment from Sandax to ensure optimal securing and protection of your goods.
What is important when securing loads?
Especially on long journeys, but also on short journeys, there are various factors, which always play a key role in load securing:
- Weatherproof: Not only the cardboard packaging itself, but also the load securing in particular must be absolutely weatherproof . Many people think of rain and wind when they think of this point. But the sun and UV radiation can also sooner or later literally put the load securing to the test. Extreme dryness, heat and cold can also play a role. Under certain circumstances, it can even happen that the load securing is exposed to several or even all influences. It is therefore important that the material neither tears nor slips. The entire load should also not slip or fall over, depending on the forces acting on it.
- Protection against shaking: When goods are transported, they are naturally in motion. Every movement shakes the packaged goods. It is therefore important that you have secured your load in a way that can withstand this shaking. Factors such as a change in the shape of the load due to the shaking can also play a role.
- Elasticity: Every load securing system should keep the load in shape, but it should also be flexible to a certain extent, so that it can lose its shape for a short time, but then also regain its shape. For this reason, we at Sandax rely on flexible materials that are also highly tear-resistant.
Types of load securing
- Force-locking load securing: Force-locking load securing increases the frictional force between the load and the loading surface by lashing it down. The load is pressed onto the loading surface with lashing straps to prevent it from slipping. The use of anti-slip material, such as anti-slip mats, can increase the effectiveness of this method.
- Form-fit load securing: Here, the load is loaded without gaps or secured by blocking devices so that it lies directly against the boundaries of the loading area. Form-fit load securing can be achieved by using locking beams, wedges or other blocking devices.
- Direct lashing: With this method, the load is secured directly to the loading area using lashing equipment such as tension belts. Variants of direct lashing are diagonal lashing, diagonal lashing and sling lashing, which are used depending on the requirements and nature of the load.
Vehicle-related aspects of load securing
- Body strength: The stability of the front, side and rear walls of the vehicle is essential for form-fit load securing. The European standard EN 12642 defines requirements for standard bodies (code L) and reinforced bodies (code XL), whereby the latter can absorb higher loads.
- Lashing points: According to the EN 12640 standard, commercial vehicles must be equipped with suitable lashing points that can withstand certain minimum tensile forces. These lashing points serve as attachment points for lashing equipment and are dimensioned according to vehicle type and total mass.
Legal basis and responsibilities
- Driver: The driver is obliged to ensure the road safety of the vehicle, including the proper securing of the load.
- Owner: The vehicle owner must ensure that the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition and is suitable for the intended load.
- Shipper: The shipper is responsible for the safe loading of the goods for transport, in particular for the correct stowage and securing of the load.
As described in detail in this section, the assumption that only the driver is responsible for correctly securing the load is incorrect
How can you secure your load?
Depending on the package , you can use different techniques to secure your load. In the Sandax load securing shop, we offer you the following options:
- Dunnage bags: Dunnage bags ensure that your load does not move, but stays in place and, above all, does not fall over. They are often found in containers, ships, wagons and lorries. They offer you a particularly high degree of flexibility so that they can also fill gaps of different sizes. They are particularly practical to use because you can fill them individually. You will need the right filling gun for this.
- Edge protectors: They are the points where the greatest forces occur - the edges of a load. It is therefore particularly important that these sensitive points are protected separately. Our edge protectors, which you can even use several times, provide optimum edge protection. The edges of your packages are excellently protected, especially during reloading. This is primarily about mechanical influences that affect your load, such as impacts or other edges.
- Maritime Load securing: Different conditions apply to your cargo on the high seas. Other regulations also apply when it comes to load securing . Because here, where your cargo is often travelling for weeks, many forces act on your packages. This makes it all the more important that the items are secured well and above all appropriately for the situation. At Sandax, we at are also very familiar with load securing for sea transport and supply you with seawater-resistant load securing.
- Lashing straps: They are also known as lashing straps and ensure optimum and fast load securing on cars, on trailers or in vans. Longer lashing straps are also ideal for securing lorry loads. Here it is above all the shaking that acts on the securing. In fact, lashing straps are probably the most widely used means of securing loads, which you can currently use. You can adjust the tension individually because, as the name suggests, lashing straps can be tensioned . We also offer you products of the highest quality and long service life.
- Mechanical load securing: The mechanical load securing category includes things like clamping beams and loading beams. They offer you a quick way to secure your load . When making your decision, be sure to check which system is installed in your vehicle. You must also select the clamping bars and load bars accordingly. With us you get durable material of the highest quality. This form of load securing is particularly popular in the food sector, as the products are food-safe.
- Container lashing: Whenever you need a restraint system for your container , container lashing is used. As a rule, such systems consist of two vertical straps into which you can hook the horizontal straps . These can be movable or firmly sewn.
- One-way lashing: This is the cost-effective alternative to our reusable lashing. This solution with lashing straps is always chosen when, for example, large export quantities are to be moved and a return of the lashing would not be worthwhile in terms of costs . Nevertheless, the load must of course arrive absolutely safely and undamaged. This is exactly what our safe and cost-effective one-way lashing is for.
- Anti-slip mats: They are literally the basis of every transport - anti-slip mats. These are available from us as pads and rolls. These anti-slip mats ensure that your pallets or load cannot slip during transport. They form the base for your packages.
All these products are certified and are sure to meet your justifiably high standards. After all, load securing is subject to numerous regulations and is alsofrequently checked . Make your contribution to safety in logistics and opt for load securing from Sandax.
